Alvord Hot Springs is privately owned by the Davis family and hosts twin concrete pools that date to the 1940s and modernized over the years. The rustic accommodations are perfect for the mood, simple and sparse, just like the desert it's in.

They charge a fee to drive up and camp and a larger fee if your would like to rent their primitive military shelters. The people running it are super kind and helpful. This private hot spring is a fine balance between a primitive hot spring and a developed hot spring. We visited in late spring when there was still snowmelt on the playa. The night we stayed here we slept inside Moby, but from inside I could still hear the tent next to us flapping furiously all night long. Those who pay to camp can use the pools 24 hours, while day visitors are welcome during normal business hours. It is well maintained but can still have sharp and/or large rocks.

I think the bunkers were definitely worth the extra $30, at least in September. The rate includes one vehicle and two people; add $10 per person for each additional guest. You can see it from Fields-Denio Road, but as you drive closer, it just feels like you’re driving parallel to it. There is main office with amenities and a 24x7 one person bathroom with a hot water sink and flush toilet. The woman who ran the mess hall for them at the Alvord Ranch announced none of the would eat without a bath once a week. Showed up kinda late, about 11:00pm, got told off by the "24hour" camp "attendant" saying they were closed. It's more on the rustic side but that's the beauty! Do not be burned!The actual springs are uphill and the pools are fed by pipes with soaker-user-controlled valves. It takes about half an hour to walk it, but to walk the playa is hours.

The Alvord Hot Springs and Alvord playa are unique and well worth a visit in the right South corner of the state of Oregon. Just leaving the Hot Springs camping area and am very sad. We were told that there was recently a group camping and the water moved from the north to the south overnight due to the high winds. The office also has a general store and they sell everything from firewood and camping gear to snacks and alcohol. We are ATLiens who explore a new city every year. Alvord Springs LLC/Facebook. There was nothing better after spending 3 days hiking and camping in the Steens than soaking in the steaming baths at the Alvord Hot Springs. I was able to drive 50 on them.

Day use is also available for those who want to come and enjoy a soak in the hot springs. We had no immediate neighbors!

The neighbors we did have were in military pods. The only thing that didn't make much sense to me was charging 30$ to let people camp on their property when the Alvord salt flat is literally 200 yards away and free...kind of a head scratcher.

Did you know that Oregon had a desert like this? The vast open space means there is little protection from the wind and any moisture can turn it into sticky mud you can’t get out of.

There are a few hotel options nearby but requires some driving. Even outhouses would be awesome. Regardless of where you camp, always use the LEAVE NO TRACE mentality. It is one of the largest playa lakes in Oregon created when rainwater fills shallow depressions in the landscape leaving behind salt minerals as it evaporates.

Just west of the desert is Steens Mountain looming over the lake bed and creating a beautiful backdrop. The stars are incredible. There is very little noise pollution in the area, so you can get amazing views of the sky. All prices were very reasonable considering the closest store 30 minutes away, each way (and more expensive). Been here a couple times the past 20 years and love the area. I HIGHLY recommend this place. You might even want to stay overnight here at Alvord Hot Springs, and you can camp for just $30 per vehicle. The so-called MASH unit (Mobile Alvord Drowsing Hut) was once in fact a extinct expando-van or expansible van truck. When I was out on the playa lakebed this became clear though I stayed found. So often there is a line. Hot spring is really well maintained and clean and the water doesn't have a lot of sulfur in it, which is nice when there isn't anywhere to shower after.
