All five of the men were killed by the tribe.

Though the message is powerful, this book felt almost too cursory. I don't think I could ever have the level of faith these men did.

This is the story of 5 missionaries who were martyred in the jungles of Ecuador in 1956 by a group of native Indians called the Aucas. My first time reading this entirely through. It has given me so much to think about, and what encouragement it is to see people living by faith and not by sight amidst persecution. Inspiring and hard to put down. Five men in 1956 gave their lives willingly for the hope of bringing salvation to the feared (though deeply loved) Auca Indians in Ecuador.

Incredible story of five men and their wives who were sold out to Christ. In several years, many became "God believers." Heartbreaking but beautiful. I read this on the heels of reading Annie Dillard's "The Living" and I found myself comparing the pioneers of the Pacific Northwest forests and the Ecquadorian missionaries......both groups were heartbreakingly brave in their zealotry, stupid, and downright quirky. All five of the North American men were killed (Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Roger Youderian, Pete Fleming, and Ed McCully). One powerful book that God used to influence my perspectives on dating and ministry.

Five, who sacrificed everything they had on earth, in hopes of bringing someone new to God. Read while in college. Elisabeth Elliot, the wife of one of the men, and Rachel Saint, the sister of another, went to live with the Waodani.

I had read this book quite a few years ago, but we just finished reading it as a family (my husband and I and our 4 older children). I got a little bogged down with the journey entries of some of the men (I don’t care a whole lot about how airplane strips are made), but the last third of the book made everything worth it. Some of the thoughts that came to mind when reading this book were, what makes a man so completely devoted to his fait.

I am profoundly impacted by their testimony, as I am by the events following this book: Elisabeth, widow of Jim Elliot, and Rachel Saint, the sister of another one of the her martyrs Nate, remained in Ecuador in their work amongst the people groups, and 2 years later went to live amongst the same Aucas who had murdered their loved ones to teach them the Bible's message of grace in their language. I think it stated that just 5 years later, the sister of one of the men who was killed was living with that same group of people. I think I was expecting a more personal biography of Jim Elliot instead of broad-ranging history of mission work in the area. It was then that they discovered the men were killed out of fear that they were cannibals. It is a very religious/Christian book and I knew that going in. She wrote the book at the request and with cooperation from the families of the five men. While I was indeed longing for a good, old-style missionary story, this was more realistic than most, quite matter-of-fact indeed, without showing the missionaries as heroes as some others do.

The film recounts the story of Through Gates of Splendor, but from the perspective of Steve Saint (the son of Nate Saint, one of the missionaries killed in the encounter) as well as from Mincavani, one of the tribesmen who took part in the attack. It is the same spirit that taunted, "If Thou be the Son of God, come down from the Cross." The devotion of these men to their Saviour, reflected so well in their own journal writings, was incredibly touching and inspiring.

At a few parts I did have to wonder though, where does the line of common sense and God's will cross? I have a vague recollection of hearing or reading or seeing a TV special about this incident and these people, so when I found this book in an RV park library, I snagged it.
